Erickson says some of them believe America is at a tipping point and want to push it over the edge and rebuild it in their image. He also says they have some standing with the vice president of the United States.
The Free Press introduced this as a deep dive into how proponents of these extreme views are funded. The editors said it is 'an important piece of journalism' that shines a light on 'shadowy behind-the-scenes players trying to build a new Republican Party in their image.'
That is the record as presented: not a fringe splinter, but a contest over the institutions themselves. The concern is not just ideas in circulation; it is access, money, boards, churches, and the channels that shape what conservative politics becomes next.
Say it plainly. When political movements let their own institutions become the battlefield, the damage is not abstract. It falls on the people who expect churches to remain churches, boards to govern responsibly, and parties to answer to their members rather than to a faction with a project.
What is true does not need an adjective: if the evidence behind these claims is as Erickson describes, then the issue is not merely ideological disagreement. It is institutional capture. And once a movement loses command of its own gatekeepers, it should not be surprised when it no longer recognizes itself.
